Website Speed: Why It Matters More Than You Think

40% of visitors leave if your page takes more than 3 seconds to load. Here's what's slowing yours down and how to fix it fast.

Performance

Most business owners don’t think about how fast their website loads. But their customers do — even if they don’t realize it. A slow site creates friction, erodes trust, and sends people straight to your competition.

The numbers don’t lie

  • 40% of users abandon a website that takes longer than 3 seconds to load
  • 1 second of delay can reduce conversions by 7%
  • Google uses page speed as a direct ranking factor — slower sites rank lower

What’s making your site slow?

The most common culprits:

1. Unoptimized images

Large image files are the #1 cause of slow websites. A photo straight from your phone can be 4–8MB. The same image, properly optimized for the web, should be under 200KB. That’s a 20–40× difference in load time.

2. Too many plugins or scripts

Every plugin, tracking script, and third-party widget adds weight to your page. Many website builders load dozens of scripts by default — most of which you don’t need.

3. Cheap hosting

Shared hosting on the lowest tier plan puts your site on a crowded server. When traffic spikes, everyone on that server slows down together.

4. No caching

Caching saves a version of your page so it can be delivered instantly to returning visitors instead of being rebuilt from scratch every time.

How to check your site’s speed

Go to PageSpeed Insights and enter your URL. Google will give your site a score from 0–100 and tell you exactly what’s slowing it down.

A score of 90+ on mobile is the target. Most small business websites score below 50.
